The first investment cycle of the after privatization, promises to transform the infrastructure of the metropolitan region of São Paulo, focusing on the universalization of water and sewage services over a period of five years. With a total of R$60 billion programmed, R$15 billion will be invested from next year, with the expectation of completion in 2028. Of this amount, R$8.5 billion will be directed to the Integra Tietê program, while R$6 .5 billion will benefit other areas of the concession, reaching around 8 million people. Carlos Piani, president of Sabesp, emphasizes the relevance of transparency throughout the investment process. In 2023, the company had already contributed 30% of investments in the sanitation sector in Brazil, totaling R$6 billion. With the new cycle, Sabesp will position itself as one of the main corporate investors in the country, expanding its impact on improving services.
The Integra Tietê program foresees the modernization and expansion of five Sewage Treatment Stations (ETEs), in addition to the construction of three new units. This initiative will allow the interconnection of 1.5 million homes, benefiting approximately 4 million people. Sewage treatment capacity is expected to increase by almost 80%, from 23.5 m³/s to 41.8 m³/s, which represents a significant advance in sanitation infrastructure. Historically, in 1992, only 70% of the population had access to treated water and 24% to sewage collection. With the new investments, it is expected that, in 2024, these rates will reach 93% and 85%, respectively. The goal of universalization of services is scheduled for 2029, anticipating the goal established for 2033.
In addition to the improvements in the concession areas, the R$6.5 billion allocated to other regions aims to benefit an additional 4 million people. Technological modernization will also be a priority, with the introduction of Nereda technology at the Parque Novo Mundo ETE, which promises to be more efficient and sustainable. Piani also expressed concerns about the challenges that may arise during the execution of the project, especially in relation to the supply chain and obtaining the necessary authorizations for the works.
