The mayor of the Mexican city of Tancanhuitz Jesus Eduardo Franco was shot and killed along with three other people on Sunday evening. The 32-year-old mayor, who took office only three months ago, was riding with other people in a private car that was hijacked by unknown gunmen. This was reported by the prosecutor’s office in Mexico, which is referred to by the Mexican newspaper Infobae and also by the AFP agency, writes TASR.
Franco was a member of the government party National Revival Movement (MORENA). Its president, Rita Rodríguez, expressed on the X social network regretted the incident and called on the Mexican authorities to investigate the case and find the perpetrators.
Dozens of representatives of municipalities in Mexico in recent years became the target of violence linked to organized crime. Last month, Mexican media reported on the beheading of Alejandro Arcos, a mayor in the southern state of Guerrero. He was murdered less than a week after taking office.
According to official data, it was from 2006, when the Mexican government deployed the military to fight drug cartelsmore than 450,000 people were murdered and thousands more are missing.
