Space in Braga opened this Monday. “I understand, but I’m afraid” – Eduardo Sá explains the concept of “enough daycare”.
The now famous opened this Monday. It’s a nursery e creche em Braga, for babies up to 3 years old, which will be open every day from 6:30 am… until 00h30 of the following day.
With 24 employees (35 soon), it will operate on Saturday and Sunday, without the usual school holidays. 92 vacancies, with sold out for some time now.
The priority is to facilitate professional and family reconciliation for those who work shifts and need this type of support; the space is intended for mothers and fathers who are in Braga Hospital and the University of Minho – professionals (or students) from these two institutions will leave their children at daycare, often until the early hours of the morning.
Eduardo Sá sees here one “problem”. And he explains: “What we observed later is that the stays and the time that these children spend in a daycare center do not always coincide with the actual work of their parents. It often goes far beyond of all this.”
“So I’m afraid that we are trivialize a situation piggybacking on some truth. And that, in the end, may have very harmful consequences“, warns the psychologist
On the radio, Eduardo Sá repeats that children benefit from being in a daycare center. But he warns: “It is important that we realize that a daycare center is enough daycare, as little daycare as possible. Within what is reasonable. And anything that goes much further than that ends up not having that many gains.”
Returning to your fear: “We rest assured because these professionals have a solution. But let’s see children who spend more time at daycare than with their parents – and that’s not funny at all“.
The psychologist realizes that the parents have commitments, they have their own schedules, but he leaves a message in the notebook: “The grown up parents have an obligation to guide in a disciplined, methodical way, so that the job is compatible with the most precious function of all: being parents”.
Eduardo Sá believes that this “seductive” solution for many parents will have
replicas in other big citiesshortly.
But the question remains: will babies who stay in daycare for so long be “more protected or a little abandoned”?
