The explosion caused the death of Igor Kirillov and his assistant.
The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) is behind the killing of the commander of the radiation, chemical and biological defense units of the Russian Armed Forces, Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov, in Moscow, a source from its ranks told AFP. According to him, it was a “special operation” of the SBU, writes TASR.
Kirillov was killed along with his assistant on Tuesday morning in an explosion in the Russian capital. The explosion occurred around 6:00 a.m. local time. It was caused by a bomb hidden in an electric scooter parked at the entrance to an apartment building on Riazansky Prospect, the Russian Investigative Committee (Sledkom) said, adding that it had started an investigation into the “murder of two soldiers”.
According to rescuers, the charge had the equivalent of about 200 grams of TNT. As a result of the explosion, the windows on the first to third floors of the apartment building were broken and the entrance door was damaged. The official car assigned to Kirillov was also damaged.
The SBU accused Kirillov of war crimes
On Monday, the SBU charged Kirillov with war crimes, claiming he ordered the use of banned chemical weapons against Ukrainian forces in the war in Ukraine. According to the SBU, more than 4,800 cases of the use of such weapons have been recorded since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
As a result, more than 2,000 Ukrainian soldiers suffered various degrees of chemical poisoning. An unnamed SBU source said Kiev considered Kirillov a war criminal and an “absolutely legitimate target”.
