“This remains an active and ongoing investigation,” Madison police said in an official statement. “Further information will be announced as it becomes available. Right now we need people to avoid the area.”
Agents from the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives responded to the incident to assist local law enforcement.
According to its website, the school has about 390 students, from kindergarten through high school.

There was no immediate word on who carried out the shooting.
Gun control and school safety are a major political and social issue in the US, where the number of school shootings has skyrocketed in recent years.
In 2024 alone, there have been 322 such incidents in US schools, according to the K-12 School Shooting Database website. According to that database, it is the second-highest number of any year since 1966, behind last year’s record of 349 such incidents.
