Ukraine is willing to discuss a new agreement that would allow transit of gas through its territory to Western Europe, but rules out extending the current transit agreement with Russia. Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhaľ announced this on the Telegram social network. Reuters reported about it.

The validity of the agreement on the transit of Russian gas to Central and Western Europe through the territory of Ukraine will end in exactly two weeks. In this context, Shmyhaľ said on Monday (December 16) that Kyiv is willing to discuss the transit of gas of any origin except Russian. He informed about this after a conversation with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, who announced in the afternoon that the issue of gas transportation to Slovakia via Ukraine would be the subject of a phone call with the Ukrainian Prime Minister in the evening.

“If the European Commission officially addresses Ukraine in connection with the transit of any gas except Russian, we will naturally discuss it and we are ready to reach an adequate agreement,” said Šmyhaľ. “I emphasized that Ukraine’s agreement with Russia on gas transit ends on January 1, 2025 and will not be extended,” he added.
