Renovation of the Ícaro de Castro Melo Stadium is signed for R$70 million

Project foresees improvements in accessibility and updating the runway, saving 21% of the initial budget

The contract for the renovation of the Ícaro de Castro Melo Stadium, in the Ibirapuera Complex, was signed for R$70 million. The project, initially budgeted at R$88.7 million, represents a saving of 21%. The information was released this Wednesday (Dec 18, 2024).

The renovation will include improvements in accessibility, restoration of changing rooms and updating the athletics track to World Athletics standards. The space, recognized for its role in training Olympic athletes, faced controversy at the beginning of the year due to a drift event, which was later relocated after criticism.

“This is just the first step towards the resumption of one of the main sports venues in our state. The Ícaro de Castro Mello Stadium is a temple of Brazilian athletics and will soon relive its best days, revitalized and ready to host the biggest events and the greatest athletes in the world”, said Helena Reis, Secretary of Sports for the State of São Paulo..

The consortium led by OCC Construções e Participações S/A, responsible for the renovation of Mangueirão, in Belém, will carry out the project. The group includes Saeid Engenharia Ltda, Playpisos Esportivos Ltda and Kango Brasil Ltda. The Housing and Urban Development Company of the State of São Paulo, in collaboration with SESP (Secretariat of Sports of the State of São Paulo), led the bidding process.

The renovation also aims to preserve historic elements of the stadium, adding a metal platform for people with disabilities, two video screens, new guardrails, more than 11,000 seats and accessible toilet modules.

Marcelo Branco, Secretary of Urban Development and Housing, highlighted interdepartmental collaboration as key to the project’s success. “This union is essential for us to deliver to São Paulo residents an Ibirapuera Complex that is a reference for sports, whether in training or high-level competitions”, White declared.
