Stanley will recall thermos bottles in Brazil

The thermos bottle manufacturer Stanley informed Senacon (National Consumer Secretariat), linked to the Ministry of Justice, which began the recall process of 401.2 thousand units sold in Brazil. Thermos bottles of 2 models, sold from 2016 to 2023, which were found to be defective, will be collected.

The North American company sells almost 3 million thermos bottles of the “Switchback” and “Trigger Action” models after recording 38 cases of burns to users due to faulty screw caps. According to the document sent to the agency, to which the newspaper had access, 3 of them were in Brazil. Stanley said that the cases involving Brazilian users were not considered serious.

Exposure to heat, with its possible shrinkage, can cause mug lids to come loose during use, posing a potential risk of leaks and burns from hot drinks”, says the document sent to Senacon.

According to the newspaper, 290,125 units of the “Switchback” model and 111,086 of the “Trigger Action” model will be collected in Brazil, regardless of the batch.

Consumers who have bottles of these models can request a new cap by calling 0800 021 3278 from Monday to Friday, except holidays, from 8am to 6pm. Also, sending an email to .

O Poder360 contacted Stanley’s advisors in Brazil via email to ask for more details about the recall in Brazil. There was no response until the publication of this text. The space remains open.

On Monday (Dec 16, 2024), Procon-SP went to Stanley to clarify whether the models recalled in the United States due to risk of burns had been sold in Brazil.

The recall was announced by the CPSC (acronym in English for the Consumer Product Safety Commission) in the United States on December 12.

According to a note released by CSPC, the threads on the “Switchback” and “Trigger Action” models shrank when exposed to heat, which caused the lid to come loose and cause accidents. Here is the release (PDF – 245 kB, in English).

Stanley, founded in 1913, has gained popularity on social media, especially with thermoses known for maintaining beverage temperatures for long hours.

This is not the first time that thermos bottles have been recalled due to burn risks. In March 2024, Takeya USA recalled about 24,000 stainless steel thermoses after reports that the lids could suddenly come off, causing hot liquids to spill.
