Two soldiers were killed and five others were injured in the explosion of a landmine in the western Mexican state of Michoacán. the local army announced on Tuesday. TASR refers to the AFP agency.
Soldiers were investigating reports of criminals in the area when a homemade mine explodedthe Ministry of Defense said in a statement. Before the explosion, dismembered bodies of three people were discovered near the incident.
The explosive is believed to have been planted by members of a local crime group at war with a larger drug cartel. Since 2018, about six more soldiers have lost their lives in similar incidentsthe ministry specified.
Mexico is plagued by widespread drug-related violence, in which more than 450,000 people have been killed, according to official figures, since 2006, when the government deployed the military to fight drug trafficking.
