Candy must not be missing on any Christmas table! What types of candy are a “safe bet” and will appeal to everyone? Take a guess, here’s a little inspiration…

The history of candy dates back to the 16th century, when it took the form of fruit figurines. It served as a toy and snack for children. It gradually began to take on a “cake” shape and was baked from flour. His function was not purely gourmet. It was believed that candy could protect the family and livestock from dark forces. Therefore, different animal shapes were cut out of the sheet of dough, as well as circles, which were supposed to symbolize the sun. The baked cakes were then hung on fruit trees so that they would have a bigger harvest next year.

Healing power

The strength and effectiveness of the candy’s magic power was mainly that it was made from its own resources. This means that the peasant woman had to use her own flour, eggs, water, butter or fruit to prepare it… Thanks to this, the family could ensure abundance and health in the future. The tradition was also interesting, when hands were never to be washed from the processed dough. On the contrary! According to old superstitions, the remains of the matter were to be fed to the cows so that they would milk well. Either way, candy had a big meaning at Christmas. And as you can see, not only gourmet…

Baking list

Nowadays, candy is more like a sweet for a festive coffee. There are a lot of recipes for sweets in cookbooks, but according to statistics, these types still win in the Czech Republic – vanilla rolls, Linz cakes, coconut balls or filled cupcakes. So if you are hesitating about what to bake for Christmas, these four types should not be missing from your list. If you want to bake more types, count on different ingredients, but they tend to be expensive before Christmas, so it is better to prepare baked cookies in advance. And not only with a list of what you will bake, but mainly with supplies that you will appreciate when creating Christmas pastries.

Hamstering stocks

“When I see discounted flour or oil somewhere, I stock up,” says forty-year-old Jolana from Kadana. He also has a habit of making a list of this year’s sweets and looking for suitable ingredients ahead of time. “My friends and I will agree to buy a larger quantity of nuts, raisins, vanilla, spices on the Internet and then share them. It will be much cheaper,” advises the passionate baker.

One dough, more varieties

According to practical housewives, it is best to use so-called universal doughs when baking cookies. These are mostly mixtures from which five to six variations of different sweets can be made. This is one of them – Linz dough. “In a bowl, mix 210g of plain flour, 70g of caster sugar, 1 piece of vanilla sugar, 1 teaspoon of lemon juice, 140g of butter and 2 egg yolks. Make one large donut from the finished dough, which you divide into five parts.

Less work, more music

Each part is one dough. It is therefore up to you to season and decorate the individual ingredients as you like. You can flavor one piece of dough with vanilla, the second with ground coffee, the third with half a teaspoon of ground lemon peel, the fourth with cocoa, the fifth with a spoonful of grated walnuts. And the sixth? You can leave it as it is… Put the individual pieces of dough in the fridge for a while and then roll one out onto a sheet, from which you can then cut out your favorite pieces of candy. In this way, you can make, for example, chocolate wheels, nut cakes, glued hearts and more.

What a kind, an original

You can also make individual types of sweets special with fillings. You can glue Linnaeus sweets, for example, with non-traditional blueberry or citrus marmalade. Combine the chocolate cakes with Nutella. Don’t forget to use the lemon glaze on the lemon cakes, which you mix from sugar, lemon and hot water. If you are baking nut cakes, fill them with a mixture that you have prepared from ground nuts, butter, sugar and rum. They are delicious!
