After spending the 2024 season away from the stage, Felipe Moraes recently announced that he will return to the bodybuilding championships. Regarded as one of the best 212 athletes (a category in which there is a weight limit of 212 pounds, equivalent to around 96kg) in Brazil and in the world, he hopes to be able to compete again between May and June next year.

In an exclusive interview, the bodybuilder explained what led to the break – his last show was the 2023 Olympia, which took place between November 2nd and 5th last year – and discussed various stages of his recovery.

The decision to stop

In May of this year, Moraes announced that he would not compete in 2024. The decision was motivated by a series of injuries that the bodybuilder had been dealing with for years. According to the athlete, the accumulation of injuries could no longer be ignored: “I started having ‘micro injuries’ throughout the training. A contracture here, a bruise there. But nothing serious, I could ‘get on with it’, you know?! It’s cool. , rest a little, etc. I was younger and my recovery was faster too.”

Also according to Moraes, the lack of specific work for stretching and mobility aligned with bodybuilding training also contributed to the worsening of his injuries. “These long years of training very hard – and without working on my flexibility and joint mobility – took me to this place”, he explains.

In order for the bodybuilder to return to his normal routine, he had to stay away from bodybuilding for three months. During this period, he used hot water compresses on the most affected areas (shoulders and knees), did physiotherapy and Pilates classes.

The athlete also highlights that it is necessary to identify each injury and treat it as soon as possible instead of trying to postpone an eventual recovery: “you have to accept what is happening, and then look for the cause and resolution of the problem.”

The return

Despite being realistic and dealing with setbacks in the best possible way, Moraes does not hide his anxiety about returning to the stage: “every time I watch a championship, I get goosebumps. The desire to compete is great.”

The Brazilian bodybuilder placed eighth at the 2022 Olympia, the year in which he made his debut in the most difficult and important competition on the planet. In 2023, he took tenth position. These results helped him to be considered one of the country’s greatest potentials in his category.

As the IFBB (International Federation of Bodybuilding & Fitness) championship calendar for next year has not yet been released, the athlete is still unable to confirm which show will star in his return. However, he and his team believe that the return should officially take place between May and June 2025.
