Deaths among indigenous people more than double in 2022 compared to 2010, points out IBGE

The number of deaths of people who lived in households with at least one indigenous resident in Brazil in 2022 more than doubled in relation to 2010, according to data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).

Os released this Thursday (19).

The total went from 6,390 in 2010 to 14,493which represents an increase in approximately 127%. Most deaths were recorded outside Indigenous Lands.

In 2022, of the 14,493 deaths recorded, 11,765 occurred outside these areaswhile 2,728 were registered within Indigenous Lands.

In urban areas, the number of deaths jumped from 4,130 in 2010 to 10,411 in 2022, representing an increase of 152%.

In rural areas, deaths increased from 2,260 to 4,082, an increase of 80.6% in the period.

Within Indigenous Lands:

  • Urban areas: 322 deaths
  • Rural areas: 2,406 deaths

Outside Indigenous Lands:

  • Urban areas: 10,089 deaths
  • Rural areas: 1,676 deaths

Between January 2019 and July 2022, 41,460 deaths of people living in indigenous households were recorded.

Most occurred outside Indigenous Lands, totaling 34,339 deaths. Within these areas, there were 7,121 records.

In urban areas, 30,752 deaths were recorded in the period. In rural areas, the number reached 10,708.

Indigenous population grows 88% in Brazil

The Brazilian indigenous population according to data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics

The number of people who identify as indigenous rose from 896,917 in 2010 to 1.694.836 em 2022.

In the Census, an indigenous person was defined as a person residing in indigenous locations who declared themselves indigenous based on color or race or considered indigenous.

The study data also point to an increase in the urbanization of the indigenous population.
