After Trump, the richest man in the world turns to Europe. Musk wants AfD to lead Germany

Shares on social media show clear inclination of the owner of Tesla and SpaceX

Elon Musk supports the Alternative for Germany (AfD), a far-right party that is already campaigning for the February elections, and in which there is great uncertainty about who could be the winner.

After actively helping Donald Trump to be elected president of the United States, the richest man in the world and owner of one of the most used social networks, X, Elon Musk is trying to extend his political influence to the other side of the Atlantic, the side from here.

Confirming his intentions for the German elections, Elon Musk shared a video published by an activist linked to the right wing, which read that “only the AfD can save Germany”.

This same sharing by Elon Musk resulted in a comment from the leader of the AfD, Alice Weidel: “Yes! You are completely right.” Later, she herself shared a message of thanks.

The most recent polls suggest that the far-right party could obtain around 19% on February 23, driven by a crisis in Europe’s largest economy. Leading the way is Friedrich Merz, from the CDU (Angela Merkel’s party), with 30%, knowing that the German political system does not allow governments without a coalition system.

This isn’t exactly the first time that Elon Musk has used X to express his political views or even to support candidates. He did this with Jair Bolsonaro or Javier Milei in Brazil and Argentina, respectively. But I had never done anything like this with European leaders.

Similar support may come to the United Kingdom. Perhaps even more than that, as the richest man in the world promised Nigel Farage to “think seriously” about a donation to the Reform UK party, also associated with the more populist wing.

The case of Germany seems to be an old interest of Elon Musk, who even mocked Angela Merkel and belittled Olaf Scholz, current chancellor whose government suffered a rejection of the confidence motion.

Among the approach to AfD leaders is the interest shown in Björn Höcke, the nationalist who led the party to the victory achieved in the Thuringia region. This Friday also shared the publication of Naomi Seibt, a climate change denier known as “anti-Greta Thunberg”, who criticized Friedrich Merz for having left out the possibility of forming a coalition with the party.
