During the closing session of the Judiciary year, this Thursday (19), the minister Gilmar Mendesfrom the Federal Supreme Court (STF), praised the performance of his colleague Alexandre de Moraes.

“Your Excellency, Minister Alexandre, fills the Brazilian nation with pride, demonstrating, at the same time, thoughtfulness and assertiveness in carrying out the multiple procedures adopted to defend democracy in our homeland”, he stated.

Mendes made the statement in reference to investigations into an alleged coup attempt aimed at assassinating the president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) and or vice-president Geraldo Alckmin (PSB). The plot would also target Moraes himself.

The dean took the opportunity to express solidarity with his colleague and his family in the face of the threats revealed in the alleged coup plan.

The minister highlighted that the facts discovered so far reveal “perplexity and indignation” for the country’s democrats. “In light of public news that a true criminal organization is planning a typical coup d’état, it is necessary to recognize that we have reached levels of paroxysm unknown in Brazilian history,” said the judge.

The investigation, conducted under the report of Moraes, led the Federal Police (PF) to indict 40 people, including former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) and former minister Walter Braga Netto, who has been in pre-trial detention since Saturday (14) .

The accused are responsible for the crimes of criminal association, attempted abolition of the rule of law and coup d’état.

Gilmar Mendes’ statements were made in the context of the annual report presented by the president of the STF, Roberto Barroso, who will leave the presidency of the Court in 2025. Barroso highlighted the advances and challenges faced by the court during the year.

In addition to the recognition, the dean also warned about the seriousness of the situation by emphasizing the need to preserve Brazil’s democratic pillars. “It is essential that all Democrats remain vigilant in the face of these events,” he said.
