The PF (Federal Police) launched an operation this Friday morning (Dec 20, 2024) investigating a sentence sale scheme in Mato Grosso. According to , search and seizure warrants are being executed at addresses linked to a judge investigated in the case.

The operation was authorized by the minister of the STF (Supreme Federal Court) Cristiano Zanin. Crimes of criminal organization, corruption, exploitation of prestige and leakage of confidential information are investigated.

The investigation began based on messages found on the cell phone of Roberto Zampieri, a lawyer who died in 2023 in Mato Grosso. With the analysis of its apparatus, the National Justice Inspectorate filed a disciplinary complaint against judges from the (Court of Justice of Mato Grosso).

The police investigation was launched after evidence that judges received undue financial advantages to judge cases, in accordance with the interests of the dead lawyer.

At the end of November, the PF issued 24 search and seizure warrants against judges, lawyers, businesspeople and employees of Brazilian Courts of Justice. Among them are 3 employees of the (Superior Court of Justice) who would have participated in a scheme to sell decisions and privileged procedural information.

At the time, Zanin said that the analysis of the lawyer’s cell phone showed a “broad framework” of dialogues between those involved that expose “spurious negotiations”. The decision highlights that there is no evidence of involvement of STJ ministers.

On December 9, Zanin returned judge Sérgio Fernandes Martins to office. He kept 2 other judges away from office. One of them is João Ferreira Filho. The other is Sebastião de Moraes Filho. Read more about the case.
