The Brazilian Senate approved, in the second round, the which is part of the expense reduction package presented by the government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The vote took place this Thursday (19) and resulted in 55 votes in favor and 18 against. In the first round, the proposal had already received support, with a score of 53 to 21. For the text to be approved, the vote of at least 49 parliamentarians was required.
In general terms, the main measures of the text limit the payment of super salaries for civil servants; changes rules on the payment of salary bonuses; and changes the allocation of part of the resources from the Fund for Maintenance and Development of Basic Education and Valorization of Education Professionals (Fundeb).
Throughout the day, the rapporteur Marcelo Castro (MDB-PI), managed to get most of the text approved by the Chamber of Deputies. However, considering the request of other party leaders, Castro removed an excerpt from the article that expressed the allocation of Fundeb resources to finance school lunch programs.
It is worth remembering that the proposal was prepared by the Ministry of Finance, led by Fernando Haddad. The expectation is to save R$71.9 billion in 2 years. The PEC was also previously dehydrated to reach the Senate.
