Hackers linked to North Korea They stole about 1,340 million dollars (1,293 million euros) from cryptocurrency platforms this yearwhich marks an annual record, according to a report published this Thursday.
US-based cryptocurrency analytics firm Chainalysis released its analysis of the activities of North Korea-affiliated hackers, saying they stole $1.34 billion in a total of 47 incidents. This figure marks a significant jump from the approximately 660.50 million dollars (637 million euros) in 20 incidents recorded last year.
“Hackers linked to North Korea have become famous for their sophisticated and ruthless trading skills, often employing advanced malware, social engineering and cryptocurrency theft, in order to evade international sanctions,” Chainalysis said in the report.
The text detailed that the hermetic country uses cryptocurrencies to finance its weapons and missile programs and stressed that it is “a danger to international security.”
North Korea stole at least $700 million in cryptocurrencies throughout 2022, according to a report published last year by the South Korean national intelligence agency, enough money to launch thirty intercontinental ballistic missiles. The increase in the activities of North Korean hackers came despite efforts by Seoul and Washington to curb and prevent their cyber activities in recent years.
