Ten EU countries proposed new sanctions for Russia: They will also apply to gas imports!

Ten member countries of the European Union, including the Czech Republic and Poland, proposed a new package of sanctions against Russia. They also request in it ban on the import of Russian natural gas and liquefied natural gas. This follows from a document obtained by the PAP agency, reports TASR.

It is a reaction to the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukrainewhich started in February 2022. In this context, the states called on the European Commission (EC) to took their proposal into account and developed similar measures against Belarus – to Moscow’s ally. They propose a package of sanctions Poland, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Ireland, Lithuania, Latvia, Romania and Sweden.

Sanctions should hit Russian energy sector and they should relate banning the import of Russian natural gas and liquefied natural gas (LNG) to the Union. “If this turns out to be impossible, the consumption of Russian natural gas and LNG would should gradually reduce in accordance with the plan, which the strategy assumes REPowerEU,” PAP said, adding that they should be on the Russian fleet transporting LNG imposed sanctions, including a ban on entering ports.

They also called for measures to be taken by the EU gradually less dependent on Russian nuclear energy, with special emphasis on uranium and trade agreements with the Russian nuclear industry. Ten signatories to the document called for additional trade sanctions, including expanded ones banning the import of technology from Russia a i export to Russiawhich could use them for military purposes. According to the document, the EC should also punish companies, institutions and third countries that bypassing the 27-member bloc’s sanctions against Moscow.

Ministers of foreign affairs of the EU member states only on Monday in Brussels adopted the 15th package of economic and individual restrictive measures in order to further limit Russia’s ability to wage war against Ukraine.
