Drying clothes in summer is definitely easier than in autumn and winter if you don’t have a dryer at home. When it’s hot outside, the laundry laid out on the balcony, terrace or in the garden is as dry as pepper after a few hours. How do you manage to dry your laundry quickly in autumn and winter and prevent moisture from wet laundry from transferring to walls and windows and causing mold and mildew? It’s easier than you think!

Drying laundry in winter does not have to be a problem. But you have to properly prepare for it.

  • A few basic mistakes can lead to mold appearing on the walls and window frames after a while.
  • Unfortunately, these problems not only look ugly, but are also dangerous for health.

We recommend what needs to be thought about at the stage of putting things into the washing machine and later, after washing, so that drying is effective and safe.

How do you dry your laundry to avoid mold and mildew?

There are a few simple rules for drying laundry. They will ensure that the laundry will dry quickly even in autumn and winter. A lot of moisture will not accumulate in the house either.

It is good not to overload the washing machine.

  • Not only will the clothes be washed better and the washing machine will last longer, but you can also hang them wider on the cords and if they are not pressed on the dryer, they will dry faster.
  • It is also a good idea to use an extra spin at the end of the wash cycle, especially for towels and bed linen.

Take advantage of the weather.

  • Even if it’s below 15°C, but the sun is shining and the wind is blowing, it’s worth putting the laundry out for at least a few hours.
  • Wrapped in sunlight and warmed by it, laundry will dry faster. Drying later at home will be more effective.

Hang clothes correctly.

  • Before hanging the laundry, it is a good idea to shake each item well and hang it on the line in a position that facilitates quick drying.
  • For example, blouses should be unbuttoned, trousers should be unbuttoned wide and the like.

It pays to have a plan where to hang which clothes.

  • It is best to hang thick clothes and sweaters on the outer cords, and delicate underwear, thin pajamas in the middle.
  • I have a rule that I change my clothes. I hang larger and thicker things that take longer to dry on one line. Finer and smaller items like underwear and t-shirts come second. Then more air flows between them.

It is advisable to ventilate the apartment while drying the laundry.

  • This will prevent the penetration of moisture through the walls. The house will not resemble a sauna and the problem of fungi or mold will be avoided.

A trick I use to dry laundry faster

In compliance with all the above rules, always in autumn and winter I add one more.

  • I hang each piece of clothing not on one line, but on two. The clothes thus have a chance to dry faster from the inside as well, since they are not hung on one thin cord. And the top and bottom of the clothes do not touch each other.

Yes, in this case I am not able to wash a large amount of laundry at once. But I know from experience that overloading the dryer causes a given load of laundry to dry for a very long time. It is better to put two washing machines at once than one. And then wait two days for things to be clean and dry.

TIP: See how easily you can save space when drying jeans. Just put them properly on the dryer.
