Albania bans TikTok for 1 year after teenager’s murder

Local media said the episode occurred after arguments between the victim and the attacker on social media.

Albania banned it for 1 year, starting in 2025, after the murder of a teenager in November. The measure was announced this Saturday (Dec 21, 2024) by the Prime Minister, after a meeting with groups of parents and teachers from across the country.

A 14-year-old student was stabbed to death by a classmate. Local media said the murder took place after arguments between the 2 boys on social media. Videos also emerged on TikTok of young people supporting the murder. The episode raised fears about the influence of social media on minors.

“For 1 year, we will ban it for everyone. There will be no TikTok in Albania”said the prime minister. He concluded by saying:

“The problem today is not our children, the problem today is us, the problem today is our society, the problem today is TikTok and everyone else who is taking our children hostage”.

TikTok is under threat of being banned in other countries, including the US. One until January 19th so that the social network is not banned in the country.

The US demands that the social network separates itself from Chinese parent company ByteDance for reasons of internal security and data collection. According to the US government, TikTok can be used by China to track public officials and carry out espionage.
