House of Representatives approves plan to avoid US government shutdown

The package now goes to the Senate, which is still controlled by Democrats until January 3 and where approval is needed to avoid a ‘shutdown’.

The House of Representatives, led by the Republican party, today approved a new budget plan to avoid a shutdown of the United States government, just hours before the deadline for an agreement in Congress.

The vote was successful after intense negotiations at the Republican conference on Capitol Hill over how to secure temporary government funding without giving in to the demands of President-elect Donald Trump, who wanted a suspension of the debt ceiling.

The plan designed by lower house majority leader Mike Johnson guarantees government funding for three months at the same levels as today, including $100 billion in natural disaster aid and $10 billion for assistance to farmers.

The package now goes to the Senate, which is still controlled by Democrats until January 3 and where approval is needed to avoid the ‘shutdown’.

The leader of the Democratic majority in the Senate, Chuck Schumer, had asked the Republican bench to resume the initial agreement, reached on Wednesday, which was set aside due to pressure from Donald Trump and his main advisor, millionaire Elon Musk. .

Of the current 430 members of the House of Representatives, 366 voted “yes”, 34 voted against and 1 voted present, while 29 did not vote.

If the Senate approves this renewed package by midnight in Washington, a government shutdown will be avoided. If you reject it, the ‘shutdown’ will affect millions of public servants, who will spend Christmas and New Year without receiving a salary.

Among the affected departments are Homeland Security, Justice, Commerce and Transportation, which includes agencies such as FEMA, which provides federal assistance in disasters and emergencies, the TSA, which provides airport security, and NASA.
