Agreement marks the first time that the streaming platform has acquired full rights to a sports competition
announced on Thursday (Dec 19, 2024) the acquisition of exclusive broadcasting rights for the 2027 and 2031 editions of the FIFA Women’s World Cup in the United States. The information was released by SportsPro Media on Friday (Dec 20).
The agreement, which also includes Puerto Rico, marks the first time that the streaming acquires full rights to a sporting competition. In addition to the matches, Netflix plans to produce a documentary series and studio programs related to the event.
The FIFA deal represents a shift in Netflix’s approach to live sports, following previous deals to stream NFL games and WWE Raw in 2024.
FIFA’s separation of broadcasting rights for women’s and men’s competitions is a novelty in the US market. Netflix succeeds Fox, which has held the rights since 2015, although the financial values of the agreement have not been disclosed.
According to Gianni Infantino, president of FIFA, the agreement “sends a strong message about the real value of the Women’s World Cup and the global women’s game”.
“Bringing this iconic tournament to Netflix isn’t just about streaming matches; it’s also about celebrating the players, the culture and the passion that drives the global growth of women’s sport,” said Bela Bajaria, head of content at Netflix.
