Budapest’s effort is to keep conflicts with Poland at a manageable level. According to the server nepszava.hu, Prime Minister of Hungary Viktor Orbán said this on Saturday in connection with the recent granting of asylum to the former Deputy Minister of Justice of Poland, Marcin Romanowski. The correspondent of TASR in Budapest informs about it.
“I don’t want to raise this case to the prime minister’s level. Our goal is to keep our conflicts with Poland at a manageable level. That’s why I won’t say anything about what I think about the situation there in the field of the rule of law.” stated Orbán at the year-end press conference in response to a journalist’s question.
As he added, a study on Poland was prepared, Romanowski’s case was examined, while the competent Hungarian minister called his request for asylum justified. “I don’t believe it was the last such case,” concluded Orbán.
The Hungarian government granted asylum to Romanowski, for whom an international arrest warrant was issued in Poland. This was announced on Thursday by the lawyer of this former deputy minister of justice. The head of the office of the Hungarian Prime Minister Gergely Gulyás later confirmed this information to the Hungarian website mandiner.hu.
It’s about political asylum, which may be granted in the event that an impartial assessment of the case of the person concerned without political influence is beyond any doubt guaranteed in the applicant’s country. This risk also exists in Poland today, Gulyás said. According to him, there was a crisis of the rule of law after last year’s elections as a result of the actions of Donald Tusk’s government.
