United States (USA) President-elect Donald Trump announced Friday the appointment of Brian Burch, leader of the conservative political advocacy group CatholicVote, as ambassador to the Vatican.
“Brian is a devout Catholic, father of nine children and president of CatholicVote,” Trump said on the social media site Truth SocialThru.
The Republican, who will serve a second term in a month, said that Burch “has demonstrated exceptional leadership, helping to build one of the largest Catholic advocacy groups in the country.”
“He represented me well during the last election, winning more Catholic votes than any presidential candidate in history,” Trump added.
Burch will be the new ambassador to the Holy See, which this year celebrated 40 years of diplomatic relations with the United States.

In 1984, then US President Ronald Reagan (1911-2004) and Pope John Paul II decided to establish formal diplomatic relations, opening an embassy in Vatican City in April of that year.
