It won’t happen: the government earlier approved a bill aimed at preventing the country’s economic paralysis just before the holidays, which would put hundreds of thousands of civil servants out of work and suspend the operation of many public services.
The bill was passed after midnight (local time, 07:00 Greek time), as the deadline to reach an agreement on the extension of federal state funding was running out. However, the White House agency in charge, “shutdown”, did not do so as the vote in the Senate was imminent.
“It’s a good result for America and Americans,” said Chuck Schumer, head of the Senate majority, with satisfaction.
The paralysis of various federal public services would put hundreds of thousands of civil servants on technical unemployment, lead to a freeze on the payment of benefits and the closure of nurseries and daycare centers, while creating a major problem in the aviation sector.
A situation that would cause widespread discontent among Americans on Christmas Eve.
