A resume is the first, and in some cases the only, opportunity to make an impression on a potential new employer. To avoid unnecessary basic mistakes, let’s summarize them briefly. There are not a few of them and they are more common than you might think.
How to write a modern, engaging and good-looking CV without lying, exaggerating and bragging about unnecessary things? It works and it’s not as complicated as it might seem at first glance. You just have to think and work constructively and meaningfully.

You have read the advertisement and decided that the offered position is exactly the right one for you, and you would like to respond in such a way that you also take the other side. So try for a moment to imagine yourself in the role of HR in the chosen company and imagine his task. He has a lot of resumes to go through, and you want yours to be the one that catches his eye. So you must not poison him in the first moment.
A longer resume may not be better
A resume that is too long and descriptive will definitely not be the right one. No one cares (except in exceptional cases) that you had hamsters as a child, went to an elementary school with individual access, and so on.
A clear, well-structured resume, “unspoken, but telling” about your basic and broader abilities, is a must. These, like education, should be presented in bullet points rather than complex sentences. In this way, the personnel specialist will be able to better understand not only your education, but also your ability to do meaningful work.
Still the same resume is not correct
It is a big mistake to prepare one universal resume and then send it to all companies. After all, it’s about your job, actually about your future. So it is not a problem to spend a little time on each of them and adapt it to the position you are applying for.
Perhaps you have experience with logistics in a warehouse and working in an office. What do you want to do next? Is it more of an official or organizational activity? Think about the nature of the offered position, expand a little (within reason) and emphasize the experiences that could be useful to the next employer.
Don’t write without thinking
A curriculum vitae drawn up “for the first time” is also not an ideal document. There are certainly exceptions among us, i.e. people who can do it, but the rest of us should certainly first draw up an outline, which we will supplement, maybe even reorganize a little, and finally cross out and, on the contrary, supplement. A resume without a clear structure, without a header and footer, does not even make sense to send.
Don’t overestimate your abilities
Yes, in the CV we should not forget to emphasize the skills, knowledge and experience that can be useful in the given position. It is possible that we all want to see ourselves in a slightly better light, but let’s be aware that an experienced HR professional or a boss will recognize at first glance when a job applicant is simply exaggerating and exaggerating. Therefore, brag, but with reason and only to the extent that is true and believable. Exaggerated biographies, with few exceptions, will eliminate themselves from the list of those that anyone will even consider.
Represent yourself
Contact information is also one of the main components of a CV. Take care of them too, because even such a fairly ordinary e-mail says a lot about you. Although nowadays it is quite difficult to find an address that is not already taken, try to create an email that will seem serious.
If you state that the company can contact you at kaculilinkapusinka@cokoliv.cz, it probably won’t work as well as k.novakova@cokoliv.cz. Do not show your outgoing nature unnecessarily, it is neither necessary nor even appropriate. Also, be aware that unless you’re applying for a job at a stud farm, your future employer probably isn’t interested in your show jumping or horse care experience. Only mention professional experience, there will be enough time for personal acquaintance after acceptance.
You’re looking for a job, not friends
Although you would like to make a friendly first impression, your resume must not be too personal, let alone contain jovial expressions or a friendly tone. It’s not a dating site, it’s a job. Follow the rule that less is more. Maintain a professional tone not only in the resume itself, but also in the attached cover letter. It is more important than we might think.
“Biography” won’t impress anyone
Finally, one more (actually basic) note. Whether your experience is the best or just basic, your resume must not, in short, must not contain grammatical errors. If you are not sure, it is better to ask for help from someone who will be able to correct any errors.
In the same way, it is important to correctly mark and save all attachments when communicating by e-mail, including any previous evaluations and recommendations. When a recruiter finds out that you can’t write an email properly, it’s a limiting factor in many professions these days. So be careful when sending the application for the selection process and follow strictly what the company requires.
It has its rules, but it’s worth it
Does it seem complicated? It’s actually complicated, but it’s a lot, so it’s a good idea to spend enough time preparing to make the best possible impression. Only in this way is it possible to proceed with the selection among interesting and perspective applicants.
