The bus that left São Paulo and was destined for the city of Elísio Medrado, in Bahia, was completely destroyed after being hit by a granite stone that was being transported by a truck on the BR-116, in Teófilo Otoni, a city in the north of Minas Gerais. The bus driver, one of the victims of the explosion, drove the vehicle in the city of Realeza, in Minas Gerais, around 300 kilometers from the accident site. In total, the trip would last a whole day, there are almost 1,800 kilometers of road. The bus would leave 22 people in Vitória da Conquista, 11 in Santa Inês and 11 in Elísio Medrado, all cities in Bahia. Due to the long distance, the drivers changed shifts.

The six were in different places on the bus. One survivor even used the vehicle’s bathroom at the time of the explosion. The other five were in seats numbers 4, 11, 15, 39 and 45.
