Do you own a bank card? We know how you can (at least partially) defend yourself against thieves…
Few people carry cash these days. And why… Instead of a heavy, padded wallet, you can carry a bank card where you can draw an unlimited amount of money. Just know the correct PIN and the reward is yours. But the same applies to anyone who gets hold of your “credit card”.
Therefore, there is always a risk that someone can take your saved money. “The card is not a bank safe. Unfortunately. That’s why you need to be careful with your belongings,” warns the bank employee
Fake hint
Fortunately, there are ways to fool thieves. And it is also the simplest (if you like, even primitive) way. “Today’s scammers are sophisticated, but they still use completely ordinary things,” says the police investigator, recommending one of the tried-and-true tricks: “Stick a label with a fake PIN on your bank card. In the past, seniors used to mark their cards in this way, and many thieves easily made a profit. But you will only take advantage of their convenience and curiosity and force them to enter the wrong PIN. If they enter it repeatedly, the card will be blocked. For you, this means that you will have to go to the bank to get a new card, but at least you will protect your savings.”
Secrets in a safe place
“The PIN is like a key to your home lock. If you let it go, you risk someone breaking into your privacy,” says the bank employee, adding that you should not share your PIN with anyone. The exception is, of course, close family members, but even with them you should carefully choose who you reveal your number combination to. Anyway, if you are worried that you might forget your PIN, never write it down on your phone or laptop. Rather, choose a neutral place that only you know…
Change is safety
Are you concerned about card misuse? Then you should change your PIN from time to time. “You can easily make this change at any ATM,” says the bank expert, adding: “Never use your date of birth or other numbers that could be easily deduced. Nor are mandatory digits like 1234 or, conversely, the descending order of 9876 suitable.” In short, your PIN should be neutral and harder for thieves to guess. “Can’t you think of anything? At least try the date of an important world event or a private anniversary that no one else has a clue about,” concludes the expert.
