After the Rio de Janeiro national team players beat the Minas Gerais team 2-1 at the Pacaembu stadium, in São Paulo, under heavy rain, the men’s final of the Taça das Favelas Brasil was suspended.

The men’s teams that would face each other in the final were the teams from São Paulo and Espírito Santo and both were declared champions. The event is organized by Cufa (Central Única das Favelas).

According to Concessionaire Allegra Pacaembu, responsible for the stadium, “a rainwater pipe that receives contributions from neighboring neighborhoods, located on the East avenue of the Paulo Machado de Carvalho Municipal Stadium, broke due to water pressure. An investigation will be carried out to determine the causes of this reflux. We also highlight that the East avenue is an area that the Stadium public does not access, but spaces to support the operation were affected”.

The stadium, which has been under construction for more than three years, has been hosting some events since September — the reopening of the pitch had taken place precisely with the São Paulo Favela Cup final.

This Saturday, the rainwater was not drained quickly enough and the arena’s lawn, which is synthetic, was full of mud.

It had already rained in São Paulo on Friday (20), with storms and strong gusts of wind. On Saturday, the rain was intense again, with a lack of light and flooding in some locations. The east zone was the hardest hit area in the city.

The wind gusts exceeded 80km/h and knocked down trees and branches, including onto the electricity grid, according to Enel.
