Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi met with the head of the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) William Burns in Kyiv. He announced it on the Telegram platform on Saturday, saying that “Bill Burns Made His Last Visit to Ukraine as CIA Director”. It was reported by the AFP agency.
The United States has been the main financial and military supporter of Ukraine since the beginning of the invasion by Russian forces in February 2022. Washington also shares military intelligence with Kyiv.
“We had many encounters during this war and I am grateful for his help,” Zelenskyi said of Burns. He added that no official information was published about such meetings, whether in Ukraine, in other European countries, in the USA or in other parts of the world. Zelenskyj also published a photo of him shaking hands with Burns. He did not specify when it was made.
The last confirmed meeting between Zelensky and Burns took place in mid-2023. Burns is set to step down as CIA director when Donald Trump returns to the White House in January 2025. Trump chose John Ratcliffe, who previously served as the director of the US Secret Service, as the new head of the CIA.
