Kay Granger is considered a veteran of Texas politics. In the 1990s she was mayor of the city of Fort Worth, near Dallas, and since 1997 she has represented a nearby congressional district in the House of Representatives. Until April 10, she held a fairly powerful role as head of the House Appropriations Committee. The committee discusses and makes preliminary decisions on almost all budget allocations for federal government spending. Since June, however, the 81-year-old has not taken part in any votes, despite the Republicans’ very narrow majority in the House of Representatives, and has only made sporadic public appearances. Since then, many have wondered about the reason for her absence.
