With Christmas approaching, in addition to the famous cod, olive oil is also on the table of many Portuguese people. However, there are those who want to save a few euros during the festive season and are giving up olive oil, as the price of this well-known “healthy fat” is high, despite being cheaper than in summer. In any case, there are always substitutes that help lower the bill on the supermarket receipt.
Butter is one of the olive oil substitutes that can help you save some money this Christmas. Ideally, butters should be consumed raw or at low temperatures. Note, however, that olive oil is a much healthier fat than butter.
While the first is of plant origin, the second is of animal origin. Furthermore, the concentration of saturated fat in butter can reach more than 70% of the total, compared to 15% in olive oil.
A more “outside the box” idea involves using avocado oil. Used mainly in salads and sauces, several studies indicate that avocado oil is an important ally for the immune system. It can also be essential for vision, as it is rich in lutein, and for cardiovascular health given the presence of oleic acid and β-sitosterol.
The well-known sunflower oil is also a substitute for olive oil with several health benefits. Rich in fatty acids and Vitamin E, this oil promises to prevent aging. Finally, know that hemp oil can also be a substitute for olive oil, especially for salads and pasta.
