The Environmental Compliance Report of the Execution Project (RECAPE) of the Reinforcement of Water Supply for the Algarve, through Pomarão, is under public consultation until January 14th, according to Portal Participa.
In August 2024, the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA) issued an Environmental Impact Statement (DIA) “favorable conditioned on the development of the project”, submitted by the company Águas do Algarve, promoter of the work.
RECAPE arises as a result of the DIA and “after the development of the project in terms of execution, collection, pumping station and pipeline, regularization reservoir, gravity pipeline and restitution work”, the document reads.
According to RECAPE, available for public consultation on the Participa Portal until January 14, 2025, the document aims to verify the project’s compliance with the criteria established in the declaration issued for the preliminary study phase.
In the previous study, the various alternative solutions for collecting water on the right bank of the Guadiana River were analyzed, as well as alternative routes for the pipelines and two locations for the installation of the reservoir.
The project envisages the construction of a surface water catchment in the estuarine area of the Guadiana river, located north of the village of Mesquita, upstream of Pomarão, in the municipality of Mértola, district of Beja.
The water will be transported through a pipeline to the Odeleite reservoir, in the municipality of Castro Marim (Algarve) to increase the capacity of the multi-municipal water supply system in the Algarve.
The system is one of the measures financed under the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR) for water management in the Algarve, whose international public tender was launched on December 13th.
The project, which will be divided into three lots, has a base price of R$101 million and an execution period of 460 working days, around two years.
According to , responsible for the work, “this is an alternative capable of guaranteeing the resilience of public supply in the region, even in periods of prolonged drought, aiming to guarantee availability for current and future consumption”.
