Israel begins cleaning and recovery operation of spaces in the north of the country

In a statement, Israeli authorities said they “have been working for more than a year to create the conditions for residents to return to their homes in a safe environment.”

The Israeli Armed Forces began a broad cleaning and recovery operation in the northern region of the country, which borders Lebanon, to remove explosives that may remain in that area, due to the .

According to the Israeli Armed Forces, in a statement cited by the Europa Press agency, “the operation involves engineering teams and additional forces, deployed in 40 communities in northern Israel”, dedicated to “cleaning up military material, waste and removing unexploded ammunition”.

The statement highlights that the military authorities “have been working for more than a year to create the conditions for the return of residents to their homes, in a safe environment.”

Around 60 thousand Israelis were evacuated from the north of the country due to the launch of rockets from Lebanon. In retaliation, Israel invaded and bombed Lebanon. At the end of November, the two countries agreed to a 60-day ceasefire.

This week, Amnesty International denounced that the Lebanese Shiite group Hezbollah perpetrated war crimes by launching rockets against Israeli territory that caused civilian casualties.

In a report published on Friday, the non-governmental organization (NGO) defending human rights reveals that it examined three attacks carried out by the Lebanese group in October that left eight dead and at least 16 injured in Israel, concluding that these acts represent violations of International Law, following the “reckless” use of this type of weaponry.

In these bombings, Amnesty International adds, Hezbollah would have used unguided ‘rocket’ multiple launch systems, whose projectiles lack reliability in terms of the objectives they intend to achieve.

The NGO’s experts – who examined the evidence relating to these attacks in recent months – understand that the principle of distinction between military and civilian objectives was not respected, even though the context was war.

The pro-Iranian Lebanese Shiite group declared on several occasions that its attacks were directed against military objectives, but admitted on other occasions that it also sought to impact civilian locations in general.
