The president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) used social media this Monday (23) to express solidarity with the victims’ families.

In a publication in his official accounts, Lula informed that the Minister of Transport, Renan Filho (MDB)was transferred to represent the government there.

“I am following with great attention the developments surrounding the collapse of the Juscelino Kubitscheck de Oliveira bridge, between the states of Tocantins and Maranhão. Minister Renan Filho is on site with the governors of Maranhão, Carlos Brandão, and Tocantins, Wanderlei Barbosa, and national and local authorities to provide all assistance from the federal government in resuming the rescue of the victims and investigation into what happened. My condolences to the families of the victims”, wrote Lula.

This Monday (23), local authorities confirmed that the number of people missing due to the collapse of the bridge rose to 12. Two people died in the tragedy. Eight vehicles fell off the bridge.

The Juscelino Kubitschek de Oliveira bridge was built in the 1960s, was 533 meters long and connected the cities of Estreito (MA) and Aguiarnópolis (TO), via BR-226.
