Netflix enters sports Christmas with a foot in the chest – 12/23/2024 – Sandro Macedo

Year in and year out, and the best things to watch during the festive week are still “Harry & Sally – Made for Each Other” and “Die Hard”, in that order. Nothing like ending Christmas with a villain with an accent falling out of Nakatomi Plaza followed by a “Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow.” And Nakatomi is in Los Angeles, host of the next Olympics.

But there is also a lot of sport this week, mainly with an English accent. It’s time for the ESPN/Disney channels to shine with a full round of the Premier League, between Thursday (26) and Friday (27).

And proving that at Christmas we celebrate the birth of Jesus, Gabriel, from Arsenal (woo), is unstoppable. Lucky for Arteta’s team, who just lost star Saka, injured. It’s boring to hear someone linking the player to Palmeiras all the time on TV. It’s easier for Pedro Raul to be top scorer in the next Home Tournament than for Jesus, Gabriel, to return to Brazil in 2025.

Christmas Day has traditionally been a good date in recent years to catch up on the NBA — again on ESPN/Disney channels. There are five games in a row, on Wednesday (25), handpicked, such as Knicks x Spurs (from French unicorn Victor Wembanyama), or the classic duel between Celtics x 76ers.

There’s even a confrontation between the stars that most polarize attention in the basketball league: LA (Lebron) Lakers x Golden State (Curry) Warriors.

However, this sporting Christmas will go down in history due to Netflix’s participation. And we’re not even talking about “Harry & Sally”, which is from Prime Video, or the police officer with Bruce Willis (produced by Fox, owned by Disney).

On the same December 25th, Netflix will finally have its big sporting moment: the broadcast of two NFL games, the American football league, which is more globalized with each passing year.

The streaming giant chose two very interesting games for the occasion, capable of diverting attention even from the Lebron/Curry duo: the current champion Kansas City Chiefs, of beloved Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce (Mr. Taylor Swift) face the Pittsburgh Steelers , team of all the protagonists of “This Is Us”. The game could win Kansas the conference title and a place in the first round of the playoffs in January.

In the other duel, the Houston Texans face the Baltimore Ravens, the team chasing the Steelers for the divisional title (which gives the right to start the playoffs playing at home, has its value).
But, you can forget Mahomes, Kansas, Lebron, Baltimore, Curry or anything like that. The name that will lead the way at Christmas (after Jesus, of course) will be Beyoncé, who will perform a discreet halftime show.

Usually, not every game has this show. Brazil, which hosted its first NFL game in 2025, put together one with its own flavor, captained by Anitta. Normally, the big halftime show only happens during the American football final, the Super Bowl, always performed by a music star.

Showing that it has more cash than João-Saf Textinho, from Botafogo, Netflix includes the pop queen to brighten up its American football Christmas. It’s good to have money. Bad luck for the Super Bowl, which will have to overcome Netflix’s joke in February. As the villain Hans would say, “Yippee-ki-yay, mother*cker”.
