Sunny and slightly cold Christmas in mainland Portugal

Christmas present for Portugal: holiday without rain and with clear skies, mthere may be frost in the northern and central interior. “Very quiet week” at least until the 30th — but New Year’s Eve should also be sunny.

A Christmas with sun and little cold is what the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) predicts for the next few days in mainland Portugal.

“These next few days until Christmas, we are going to have a dry weather scenario with slightly cloudy or clear skies” and, in some places, they even foresee “above average maximum temperatures for the time of year”, an IPMA meteorologist told the Lusa agency.

Maximum temperatures should “vary significantly between 12/14° and 16/17°C, possibly in some places on the coast, particularly on the south coast, therefore on the south coast of the Algarve we will have maximum temperatures that are even slightly higher, varying significantly between 17 and 20°C”. In the northeast of Trás-os-Montes and Beira Alta, maximum temperatures can be below 12/13 degrees.

“As nights will be somehow coldalthough not with very low temperatures for the time of year” and minimum temperatures “should vary significantly between 4 and 7°C”, and the coastal strip of the southern region and the coast of the Lisbon region may have “minimum temperatures a little greater in the order of 7 to 10°C”.

Minimum temperatures “in the order of 0 to 2/4°C” are predicted for the northeast of Trás-os-Montes and Beira Alta, and “it is likely that in some places in the northern and central interior there will be the formation of frost”. In these regions, from the 26th onwards, “the formation of low cloudiness, mist and fog is likely”, said the expert.

Regarding the wind, IPMA forecasts indicate that until the 25th it should be “weak to moderate, predominantly from the northeast, blowing temporarily strong in the highlands”.

Climatologist Mário Marques corroborates the assessment of “quite mild” temperatures for the time of year: “it won’t be very cold”, he tells .

And on the islands?

In the Azores and Madeira archipelagos, “the situation changes”.

“In Madeira, wind and some cloudiness and rain are expected” and may affect flights; In the Azores, the minimum temperature will vary between 13º and 15ºC, and the maximum between 17º and 19º, with good weather expected for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

And on New Year’s Eve?

The good weather forecast (for winter standards) extends until New Year’s Eve — but with more restrictions.

“I think we will have a New Year’s Eve also sunnyalthough there may be a transition period towards the end of the year”, says the climatologist.

Until then, “it will be a very calm week, with no forecast of rain showers or rain forecast, “at least until the 30th”, guarantees Mário Marques.
