Elon Musk, the richest man in the world and founder of SpaceX, took a step towards making a new city in Texas, in the United States, a reality. The formal request was filed with Cameron County Judge Eddie Treviño as part of a plan to turn the area around SpaceX’s operations into a city. The proposal was sent on behalf of the local community, currently known as Starbase, where the company’s launch center is located.
“On behalf of the entire Starbase community, I am pleased to submit this petition requesting an election to determine whether Starbase, Texas should be incorporated as a city,” Musk wrote in the letter. This place, which today is mainly an industrial complex, could gain a new role as an official city. The idea is that this transformation will facilitate the necessary growth for the workforce that will develop and manufacture Starship, SpaceX’s spacecraft.
According to her, plans include creating “world class” housing for workers already living in the area and for those who will join the team in the future. Additionally, Musk announced in July 2024 that SpaceX would move its headquarters from Hawthorne, California, to Texas.
The objective goes beyond expanding SpaceX’s operations, Elon Musk wants south Texas to be “the gateway to Mars”, a strategic step in the company’s ambitious project to colonize the red planet. According to Musk, this city will be an important milestone in achieving this goal.
Although the plan is promising, critics point out that some of Musk’s previous ideas, such as the ultra-fast transatlantic train or global flights in 30 minutes, did not come to fruition. It now remains to be seen whether Starbase will be a reality.
