Video shows car stuck in bridge crack that collapsed in Tocantins

Aerial images recorded the moment a car got stuck in a crack in the bridge that collapsed on the border between Tocantins and Maranhão, last Sunday afternoon (22).

The Government of Tocantins confirmed this Monday (23) that the Juscelino Kubitschek de Oliveira bridge, which connects the cities of Aguiarnópolis (TO) and Estreito (MA).

In the video, released on social media, it is possible to see the car stuck in the crack that opened in the asphalt. Furthermore, the images show other cars parked in the structure – which resisted even after the collapse of the central part of the bridge. Watch:

The PM claims that, in the last update, it caused the death of a 25-year-old woman. Another person, a 36-year-old man, was found alive and taken by witnesses – who were present at the site of the collapse – to a hospital in Estreito (MA), with a broken leg.

In the latest update, at least ten vehicles that fell into the river were identified, four trucks, three cars and three motorcycles.

The bridge that connects the states of Maranhão and Tocantins fell, on the afternoon of this Sunday (22), on the BR-226 (TO) highway, over the Tocantins River, in Estreito, a municipality located about 744 kilometers from the capital São Luís ( BAD).

On social media, Rubens Pereira Jr, Federal Deputy from Maranhão, confirmed that the Ministry of Transport is investigating the causes of what happened.

The Tocantins River is the second largest river found entirely in Brazilian territory, according to the Amazon Environmental Research Institute.

According to senator Eliziane Gama, a councilor in the region recorded the moment the bridge began to collapse, while warning about the risks in the area. Watch:
