Christmas desserts is a wealth of aroma and taste. We recommend using the wisdom of old cookbooks and preparing a traditional dessert that surprises with its simplicity and delicious taste.

Preparation is quite a labor-intensive task. However, if we undertake it, it is worth preparing more of it. During the holidays it is universal ingredient, which can be useful for many recipes. The most popular ways to use it are poppy seed cake, dumplings with poppy seeds or kutia. However, it is worth experimenting and give it a completely different dimension.

Crackers with poppy seeds are nothing else shortcrust cookies served with poppy seed filling. Their preparation is very simple and requires only a few ingredients. If we already have ready-made poppy seed mass at home, preparing them will take less than half an hour. Just knead the dough, cut out cookies and bake. You don’t even need to cool it in the refrigerator. The crackers are stuck into the aromatic poppy seed mass placed in a bowl. Thanks to the addition of cream, the poppy seed is even creamier and easy to apply. The advantage is that everyone can decide what amount of poppy seeds suits them. With shortcrust pastry, it is easy to serve the appropriate portion.

The recipe we provided comes from the “Universal cookbook” by Maria Ochorowicz-Monatowa. The recipe from 1913 will surprise guests today and prove to them that certain desserts are timeless.

Ingredients for cookies:

  • 250 g of wheat flour,
  • 125 g of butter,
  • 125 g sugar,
  • 1 yolk,
  • 1-2 tablespoons of cream.

Ingredients for the poppy seed mass:

  • 80 g ground poppy seeds,
  • 1 tablespoon of sugar,
  • a handful of almonds,
  • 1 tablespoon of grated lemon peel,
  • 2-3 tablespoons of cream 30 or 36 percent

We start by preparing the dough. Place the dry ingredients – flour and sugar – in a bowl and mix. Then add cold butter cut into cubes and egg yolk. Knead the dough quickly, adding a tablespoon or two of cream at the end, depending on how crumbly it is. The cream should help to obtain a pliable dough.

Roll them out quite thinly on a pastry board or clean countertop, and thene cut out stars, crescents or circles with a cookie cutter. Put them in the oven preheated to 180 degrees C for about 12-15 minutes. When we notice that they are browning, we can take them out.

While the cookies are baking, we can start preparing the poppy seed filling. Place the cooked and ground poppy seeds in a bowl, add sugar, finely chopped almonds, lemon zest and cream. Mix everything together thoroughly and try. Season to taste if any ingredient is missing.

Put the prepared mass into a nice bowl or salad bowl, and then add the ready-made cookies into it. Use them to scoop out the poppy seed mass and enjoy the aromatic taste of the dessert.
