At least 7 personas died and 10 others were injured due to torrential rains that affect the Northwest department, in Haiti, where 11,000 buildings were floodedaccording to a partial report from the regional directorate of Civil Protection.
Three of the fatalities occurred in the town of Rue 3 Grace, another three in Ruelle Moise and one in Morne Bethel, according to this report, which indicates that 500 houses were destroyed and another 100 seriously damaged. This figure is likely to increase in the coming hourssince Civil Protection is compiling reports from all regions affected by the torrential rains of recent days. Among the flooded buildings are homes, schools, warehouses and public and private offices in several areas of the city of Port-de-Paix. In addition, around twenty vehicles were swept away by the waters.
On the other hand, Haiti’s hydrometeorological unit issued a flood alert on Monday for the departments of Nord and Grand’Anse, given the heavy rainfall affecting these regions of the country. The president of the Presidential Transition Council (CPT), Leslie Voltaire, and at least nine government ministers are stranded in Cap Haitien (north), due to the bad weather that is hitting that, the second city in the country.
