Spector will serve his sentence in a penal colony with a “strict regime”.

Gene Spector, an American citizen of Russian origin, was sentenced to 15 years in a penal colony in Moscow on Tuesday for “espionage”.

Spector is serving his sentence in a “maximum security” penal colony. Agencies have released a photo of him in a holding cell wearing glasses and a dark jacket. He was charged with espionage in August 2023, with no further details released. The entire trial, except for the sentencing, was held behind closed doors due to the classified nature of the case.

Spector was born in 1972 in Leningrad as Yevgeny Mironovich. He was the executive director of a medical equipment manufacturing company in Russia.

He was detained in 2020 and the following year after pleading guilty, he was sentenced to four years in prison for attempting to bribe the adviser of former Deputy Prime Minister Arkady Dvorkovič. His sentence was later reduced by six months after a retrial. Anastasia Aleksejevová was sentenced to 12 years for corruption in April.
