The minister of the (Supreme Federal Court) Alexandre de Moraes decided to maintain the arrest of those accused of acting as masterminds in the murder of the councilwoman (Psol-RJ) and the driver Anderson Gomes, in 2018. The decision was signed on Saturday (Dec 21. 2024) and released this Monday (Dec 23).

Moraes maintained the preventive detention of the counselor of the (Court of Auditors of Rio de Janeiro) Domingos Brazão, the federal deputy, Domingos’ brother, and the former head of the Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro Rivaldo Barbosa.

The accused deny participation in the crime. They have been imprisoned in federal prisons since March.

According to the investigation carried out by the Federal Police, Marielle’s murder is related to the councilor’s opposition to the interests of the political group led by the Brazão brothers, who are linked to land issues in areas controlled by militias in Rio.

According to the plea bargain of former police officer Ronnie Lessa, a confessed defendant in carrying out the gunshots at Marielle, the brothers Brazão and Barbosa acted as those who ordered the crime. Barbosa would have participated in the preparations for the execution of the crime.

In November, Lessa and former police officer Élcio de Queiroz, who drove the car used in the crime, were convicted by the 4th Jury Court of Rio de Janeiro. Ronnie Lessa was sentenced to 78 years, 9 months and 30 days in prison. Élcio, 59 years, 8 months and 10 days.

Giniton Lages, the police officer who initiated the murder investigation, was also targeted by Moraes. He had his provisions reduced on suspicion of interfering in the investigations into the murder of councilor Marielle Franco and driver Anderson Gomes.

The delegate was removed from his position in March 2024 by decision of the minister, who also ordered the use of an electronic ankle monitor and the loss of salary.

In November, the 1st Panel of the STF, unanimously, requested PC-RJ delegate Giniton Lages to receive his full salary again.
