Tragedy in Türkiye: explosion at munitions factory leaves 12 dead

Investigation underway to determine the causes of the accident

A violent incident caused at least 12 deaths and left four people injured.

The incident occurred on the morning of Tuesday, December 24, at 8:25 am (5:25 am, Portugal time), in the capsule production section, revealed the governor of Balikesir, İsmail Ustaoglu.

The reason for the explosion is still being investigated, but authorities have ruled out the possibility of sabotage, according to Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya.

Videos captured at the scene show a fireball destroying part of the structure, followed by columns of black smoke. Fragments of damaged steel were found around the building.

Emergency teams, including firefighters, health teams and security forces, went to the scene to control the fire and provide assistance to the victims.

The impact of the explosion was felt throughout the town of Köteyli, witnesses reported, cited by CNN.

One, pointed out the Minister of Justice, Yılmaz Tunç.

“I pray to God to have mercy on my deceased brothers, I offer my condolences to their families and I wish a speedy recovery to our injured”, wrote on the social network X (formerly Twitter), showing himself to be “deeply sad”.
