The journey begins in Berlin. At the supermarket around the corner I load a shopping cart full of products that contain palm oil. Margarine, frozen pizza, cookies, hand cream, a square bar of chocolate, laundry detergent, deodorant stick, cereal. Sometimes palm fat appears in the small print ingredients list. In the case of cosmetics, the raw material is hidden behind names for further processed products, such as glycerin. I’ve probably consumed palm oil hundreds of times without knowing it. Greenpeace estimates that half of all supermarket products contain palm or palm kernel oil.
