Agreement aims to strengthen the fight against hunger and food waste; the products are intended for nursing homes, daycare centers and community associations

The (Social Service of Commerce) and the (Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources) signed a partnership so that, from 2025 onwards, food seized in environmental inspection actions will be destined for the Sesc Mesa Brasil program, expanding the network of support for families in situations of social vulnerability. The technical cooperation agreement aims to strengthen the fight against hunger and food waste in Brazil.

Ibama’s donations, as they are largely products of animal origin, increase the inclusion of protein in meals offered by assistance entities registered with Sesc Mesa Brasil.

Because they have a higher value and are perishable, these animal protein products are normally received in smaller quantities by the program.

“This partnership brings countless advantages for everyone. Among them is the responsible use of food that would otherwise be discarded, contributing to the reduction of waste and efficient use of resources. Furthermore, it strengthens the social role of Sesc, which expands its capacity to serve vulnerable communities”says, president of the CNC-Sesc-Senac System.

Donation record

Sesc Mesa Brasil will end 2024 with the largest food collection since its creation, 3 decades ago. There are more than 52 million kilos in donations and the expectation is that the total balance for the year will reach 55 million kg, driven by the Christmas campaigns carried out in December. The historic milestone is another celebration of the 30 years of the program to combat hunger and food waste.

The largest private network of food banks in Latin America, Sesc Mesa Brasil forms a bridge between donor companies and institutions that take meals and food to families in food vulnerability. The program has 3,400 partner companies, which donate their production surpluses to be distributed to 7,200 registered charities, reaching more than 2.2 million people every month.

“We have seen solidarity and donations grow over the last year, showing that Brazilian society is fighting to increase food security. By proposing the full use of food and avoiding the disposal of these products, which could end up in landfills, we contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions that lead to global warming, one of humanity’s biggest concerns today”these Tadros.

Sesc Mesa Brasil works in partnership with companies, rural properties, fruit and vegetable stores, supermarkets, small markets and businesses, which donate their surplus production and food that is outside commercial standards, but is still safe for consumption. The products are intended for institutions such as nursing homes, daycare centers and community associations.
