Russia carried out attacks on Ukraine’s energy system this Wednesday (Dec 25, 2024). Some cities have been hit by ballistic and cruise missiles, as well as drones. Volodymyr Zelensky said this was an attack “inhuman” on Christmas Day.

According to local governors, 6 people were injured in the city of Kharkiv in northeastern Ukraine, and one person died in the Dnipropetrovsk region, according to Reuters. Because of the attacks, half a million people in the Kharkiv region were left without heat, with temperatures just a few degrees Celsius above zero. Blackouts were also recorded in Kiev, the capital of Ukraine.

“Today, Putin deliberately chose Christmas for an attack. What could be more inhumane? More than 70 missiles, including ballistic ones, and more than 100 attack drones. The targets are our energy infrastructure. They continue to fight for a blackout in Ukraine“, wrote Zelensky in a post on the social network X (formerly Twitter).

According to the Ukrainian military, air defense forces shot down 59 Russian missiles and 54 drones during the night and morning of this Wednesday (Dec 25). “Russia’s Christmas gift to Ukraine: more than 70 missiles and 100 drones, aimed at Ukrainian families celebrating in their homes and the energy infrastructure that supports them”said US Ambassador Bridget Brink

“According to preliminary reports, our defenders managed to shoot down more than 50 missiles and a significant number of drones. Unfortunately, there were hits. From now on, there are power cuts in several regions. Power engineers are working to restore power supply as quickly as possible“, disse Zelensky.

Serhiy Lysak, governor of Dnipropetrovsk, said the fatal victim was hit during an attack on regional energy facilities. “Since the morning, the Russian army has been massively attacking the Dnipro region. It is trying to destroy the region’s energy system.”these.

Ukrainian Energy Minister German Galushchenko said in a Facebook post that Russia was massively attacking the country’s energy sector. The minister also announced that there were restrictions on the supply of electricity in the region.

The Kharviv region was attacked by Russian ballistic missiles, according to the Ukrainian Air Force. Regional governor Oleh Syniehubov stated via Telegram that there was damage to non-residential civil infrastructure.

DTEK, Ukraine’s largest private energy company, said its facilities were hit, with electrical equipment seriously damaged. “We call on all of Ukraine’s allies to end this state-sponsored terrorism now by giving our military the air defense ammunition they need to protect critical energy infrastructure.”said DTEK CEO Maxim Timchenko.
