More than 60 stores in 12 major North American cities, including New York, Los Angeles, Boston and Seattle, were closed
A strike by Starbucks workers will expand to more than 300 stores in the United States on Tuesday, with more than 5,000 workers leaving their posts before the five-day strike ends this Christmas Eve, the workers’ union said.
Starbucks Workers United, which represents employees at 525 stores across the US, said more than 60 stores in 12 major US cities, including New York, Los Angeles, Boston and Seattle, were closed on Monday.
Negotiations between Starbucks and the union had reached an impasse with unresolved issues over wages, staffing and hours, leading to the strike that began on Friday.
The Christmas Eve strike is expected to be the biggest ever at the coffee chain, the union added. “These strikes are an initial show of strength, and we are just getting started,” an Oregon barista said in a union statement.
