Tin foil is very useful in the kitchen – and not just for cooking. You probably use it quite often, but do you know how to sort it? Which waste container is suitable?

Of all the items that can be found in practically every kitchen, foil (aluminum foil) is by far the most versatile. It can be said that there is no process or activity in which it cannot be used.

What is aluminum foil made of?

Aluminum foil, used in many kitchen activities, is made of aluminum. Its production process begins with melting pure aluminum, which is then rolled to obtain thin sheets with a thickness of only 0.006 to 0.02 mm. Ultimately it has two sides – a shiny one, which reflects heat better, and a matte one, which absorbs light better.

The aluminum from which the foil is made is not only light, but also resistant to corrosion and does not contain any toxic substancestherefore it is suitable for contact with foodstuffs. In addition perfectly isolates products from light, air and moisturewhich prevents spoilage and drying of food.

Where to throw away the foil?

  • Throw tin foil, like many other metal products, in the yellow container intended for metals and plastics. Aluminum can be recycled many times without losing its properties, so it is worth ensuring that the used aluminum foil is placed in a suitable container.

However, do not forget that aluminum foil intended for recycling must be cleaned of food residues, as contaminated waste is much more difficult to process.

  • If the aluminum foil is heavily soiled with grease or food residues, it is better to throw it in the mixed waste (black container), because in this condition it may not be properly recycled.

Aluminum foil – applications

  • Tin foil can be used in the kitchen in many ways when baking and grilling.
  • Thanks to its properties, it is perfect for packing meat, fish or vegetables, ensures even baking and protects food from drying out.
  • Another advantage of the foil is that the food wrapped in it will stay warm longer.
  • Aluminum foil is suitable for food storage, because it creates a barrier that protects food from moisture and dirt.

Which side of the foil should we wrap the food on?

  • Although there is no scientific evidence for this, it is generally accepted that food should be packaged with the matte side on the inside and the shiny side on the outside.

The matte side of aluminum foil is less smooth, which can cause it to stick to food better. The shiny side reflects heat better, which could theoretically help keep the food warm, well in practice, the differences are minimal.
