Yoon misses his appointment for martial law questioning for the second time in Seoul

The South Korean president, , missed the appointment this Wednesday to be questioned by the special team investigating his imposition of martial law on December 3, which represents the second session for the same purpose for which the president did not appear.

This was reported by the South Korean news agency Yonhap, after Yoon’s legal advisor, Seok Dong-hyeon, had warned the day before that it was “unlikely” that his client would attend the appointment, also insisting on what had already been said. commented earlier this week about his client’s priorities.

“The president believes that the impeachment trial before the Constitutional Court should have priority (over criminal investigations), since the National Assembly (Parliament) has already started the entire process,” the lawyer insisted.

. His future now depends on what the Constitutional Court decides, which has a maximum of six months to determine whether or not the president violated the Magna Carta by implementing martial law and whether, therefore, his dismissal should be ratified or he should be reinstated in office. position.

Even so, both Yoon – who has been prohibited from leaving the country – and other members of his Cabinet, senior police and military and ex-military officials are being investigated in relation to the declaration of the state of emergency for alleged crimes of mutiny. , abuse of power or insurrection.

The latter is the most serious of the three and can lead to the arrest of the president, since not even presidential immunity prevails in cases of insurrection, a crime that, with regard to those considered leaders of an uprising, implies life imprisonment or death penalty (on which there has been a moratorium in South Korea since 1997).

The lawyer Seok already gave as an example on Monday what happened with the ousted president Park Geun-hye: until the Constitutional Court ratified her dismissal, she did not begin to be investigated for the corruption plot that led to her fall and subsequent imprisonment.

At the moment, Yoon already missed a first summons to be interrogated the previous week, and the presidential security services have done everything possible to reject the calls sent by the Prosecutor’s Office or the special team formed by the anti-corruption entity, the police and the Ministry. of Defense.
